Instructional Approaches
Daily Agenda |
You will find our daily agenda posted on the board. Be sure to check the homework board and/or weebly for upcoming assignments as well.
|
Google Classroom & Drive |
Each student will use this to work on and hand in individual and team assignments and projects.
You will also use this to hand-in final writing pieces to Ms. Miller. This requires you to know your username and password. |
Workshop Journals
|
The workshop journals will be used for both Readers' and Writers’ Workshop. Homework, class assignments, discussions, and notes will be completed in these journals. Even though technology is a large part of instruction, you will still be completing hardcopies of work which will be put into these notebooks.
|
Independent Reading |
You will be required to read AT LEAST three (3) books of your choice by the end of this year (about 1.5 a quarter). Additionally, it is required you bring these independent reading books to class each day. You will have time for independent reading in class everyday. You will be required to complete a project of your choice on this assignment. Refer to the "Class Resources" page to view these options. This project is always due before the end of each quarter on the dates below. Each day at the beginning of class, you will be required to update your reading status. This must be done before independent reading time.
Due Dates: Project #1: October 21, 2016 Project #2: December 9, 2016 Project #3: January 20, 2017 |
Grading & Evaluation Methods
Homework |
Homework will be assigned 3-5 times a week. It is expected to be completed because there is a purpose for everything we do. Homework may be graded on completion or used for class discussions and activities. Homework will only be accepted the day it is due. Be prepared!
|
Classwork/Participation |
Your participation in class discussions and activities is vital to the course. If you choose not to participate, your grade will reflect it. In class, work may include--but is not limited to--daily journals, exit passes, worksheets, concept maps, writing assignments, projects, and presentations.
|
Tests/Quizzes |
Tests and quizzes will be announced at least a week in advance. The tests may include multiple choice, matching, short answer and essays. There may be quizzes given once per week.
|
Projects/Writing Pieces |
Projects will focus on concepts covered in class and will ask you to be creative with the factual material or reading we are learning. While some class time may be provided to work on projects, you will also be required to work on them at home. Projects may be assigned to groups of students or individuals upon the teacher’s discretion. Rubrics will be used for all projects. Use the rubric—your grade is not meant to be a surprise.

Course Expectations
Attendance: The only absences that will be excused are due to illness, death in the family, or a pre-approved cultural experience/trip. A handwritten note from a parent/guardian/doctor is requested upon your return to school in order to be eligible for assignment extensions past the fifth day mark.
Tardies: If you are not in your seat ready to work when the class period begins, you are considered tardy. The 1st tardy will result in a warning, the 2nd tardy will result in a phone call home, the 3rd tardy will create 1 absence. Keep in mind, excessive tardies may result in a teacher referral to the Attendance Coordinator.
Make-Up and/or Late Work: If you know you will be absent turn in your work early, share it on Google Drive, or email it upon your return to school. If you are absent unexpectedly, bring in a note. The number of days you are absent will be how many days you have to complete the assignment(s), pending note approval. Assignments submitted late after the fifth day will earn no more than 60%. All assignments are posted on the weebly, so there should be no excuse. If you are present when an assignment is assigned and absent on the day it is due, you may turn in the assignment upon your return. However, you cannot earn more than a 60%.
It is your responsibility to check the weebly and PowerSchool, and turn in all late work. Make-up work should be shared with Ms. Miller via Google Drive in order to be graded. In the event handouts were passed out on the day you were absent, check with Ms. Miller for your copies.
